The first episode of the TWS Slalom Technique Series is about one of the most important things in slalom windsurfing, rigging and tuning your slalom sail. Marco Lang and Jordy Vonk discuss the important things to look out for to make sure your sail is as fast as possible.

Rigging the sailEvery windsurf session starts with rigging the sail and getting the board ready, do this right and you will have a much nicer session. In this clip you can see how Jordy Vonk rigs the North Sails Warp. He starts by sliding in the mast above the cambers and checks if it is all the way through to the mast cap. Using the North Sails Power XT extension makes it much easier to put the right amount of downhaul on the sail without needing a lot of power. After putting on the cambers and the boom you can look at the essential part of making your sail as fast as possible, the tuning.

Tuning the sailOn the North Sails Warp there is a point in the top of the sail which you can use to see how far the wrinkles have to go on the sail. Nowadays many sail brands have got a similar spot in the top of the sail, otherwise it is a matter of testing and trying out which set-up works best for your sail. This can be done by putting the downhaul on one point, try out how it feels then put 1 cm more downhaul and try again. You also want to make sure that the bottom three battens are on tension, which you can do by twisting the ends until the wrinkles in the sail disappear. Now your sail is ready for another slalom session with your friends.
