Jem Hall

Summer is coming and about now we are all dusting down our kit and preparing to dig out our summer suits. However, we need to gain some direction in our sailing and improve so what better way than to get some coaching? So to whom do we turn? Do we go on a windsurfing holiday, do we get some UK coaching? Are we better placed with a Guru, an RYA school or maybe a foreign hire centre with onsite coaching? Over the coming weeks we will investigae all those options and we kick off with a little chat with Jem Hall learning a little more about him and his coaching.

Zara Signs With Simmer Sails

For 2009 Zara will be using Simmer Race sails for all speed events.

Being on Simmer is a great move for me as having support from Farrel O'shea not just as an importer but as a mentor and coach with vast knowledge and experience in speedsailing will be invaluable. Simmer race sails over recent years have really become a force to be reckoned with and I am really looking forward to using them in anger!

El Yaque, Margarita

Many moons ago a group of struggling windsurfers formed the Carve Club. Since then the group has come a long way, not just for our windsurfingtalent but in our now legendary ability to have the piss taken out of us. Now known as the Pathetic Sharks,we wereso keen to build on what we learnt from out first foreign trip to EL Tur that we decided that a break from the winter blues was in order so we are soon to be off to Margarita.

When we get back you can read all about our trials and tribulations but until then take a look at this wonderfull 22 minute epic video detailing all the skills that we could never hope to achieve.

A Blast From The Past.

Only recently do we have the luxury of handhels GPS units. In recent times they have grown in popularity and sites such as GPS Speedsurfinghave only helped that. This has made it easy for us to measure our speed and compete against ourselves. However, wehaven't always had it so easy. The early speed competitions required a team on the shore with stopwatches measuring a sailor between two points. Later on we had speed guns, but there were other ingenious gadgets that measured our speed. Take a look at this wonderful device from 1988.

Abu Soma, Egypt

Watersports manager, Seb, spent 5 months working in theMark Warner centre, Abu Soma. To some, the idea ofspending 5 months in the middle of nowhere with no nightlife might seem odd. However, to adedicated windsurfer like Seb this was paradise. While there, Seb took the time to put together this excellent video showing what a fantastic venue it is, even when the Russians invaded. Support Windsurfing in El Medano

Now open again

IT IS OPEN? After all the battles, the OTC is finally allowed to re-open. We would like to wish Tris and the teamthe best of fortunes for thecoming year. The full report can be found on the link below.

In the last month, The OTC, along with several windsurfing storage facilities in El Médano's main bay, have been forced to close by the local authorities. This action seems a little bizarre in the current economic climate, butThe OTC team are confident that it will only be a matter of time before the issue is resolved. In the meantime to help them show those concerned the level of international support for windsurfing in El Médano and to help speed up the process of re-opening, they ask you to sign the petition onThe OTC homepage -www.otc-windsurf.com.

There will also be regular updates on the situation on their News page, so keep checking back. Many thanks for your support.

Am I loosing the plot, crawled out of my tent at 5am to watch the sun coming over the mountain before heading to the water with a SUP board. To be honest I thought my camping days were over and as for the SUP boards, well lets just say I tried it but didn’t understand what all the fuss was about, why paddle when a rig will do.
