A NEW Wells Rigging Area Possibly…….. but Pay Your Doos…..

Possible Rigging Area:

As you all may well be aware the Holkham Estate who own the Wells beach car Park and Beach cafe have are spending a considerable sum of money refurbishing the Beach car Park at one of our favourite windsurfing locations in Norfolk. This refurbishment will take until Xmas to complete and will mean all of the car park will be turned to hard surface to avoid the pot holes and massive puddles the car park has suffered from over recent years.

Whilst talking to the Manager of Holkham car parks I mentioned that the windsurfers would love a dedicated rigging area with soft standing somewhere on the site. They confirmed that there is a talk of a pathway being established in the pinewoods between the beach and the car park from the access steps at the east end of the car park to the beach Cafe. After my request they have promised to look into a dedicated rigging area somewhere along that path which would allow us to rig on a pinewood soft surface out of the wind and safe from cars. They have made no promises but I’m sure you will agree this is a major step forward in securing a proper safe place for us to rig our kit safely and without inconveniencing other car park users. Lets see what develops over the next few months.

Sailors Knowingly Underpaying The car Park Tolls:

They also did mention to me that they are aware that a certain minority of windsurfers purposely underpay for their car park stay whilst they sail with a view that the car park attendants will ‘turn a blind eye’ to those who avoid paying the correct amount for their stay at the car park (errr….. I know of several people who do this myself!!). Whilst the attendants will continue to take a pragmatic view when we arrive and wish to view the conditions before deciding whether to stay for the duration or not, they will be clamping down on persistant offenders who choose to use the car park whilst sailing for several hours.  A list does exist of car plates that abuse their parking tolls so abusers be warned!

I guess if you don’t think the car park is worth the money then simply don’t use it – you can always park outside Wells and walk your kit  the two and a half miles to the beach and save your £6!! :-)))…oh, and on your way past the harbour Office buy a Windsurfing permit for sailing Wells waters…….. at the last count only 5 of us windsurfers have one!

Its worth noting that annual passes are available at discount rates (I have had one for 8 years now) if you buy them before January 1st each year.

So those who have short arms and long pockets (you know who you are) please start paying  so the rest of us can enjoy the spoils of a dedicated rigging area we all would like………
