I tried installing the java runtime plugin but it didn't work....

Oh well, something I cannot deal with as it's a java problem on your machine.
Shame really as it makes uploading lots of pictures a lot easier.

When I downloaded the java plugin AVG detected a virus and I had to move it to the vault - I'll continue with the old way !!

Where did you download it from. Go to www.java.com/en/ . There is definately no virus in there.
