Avon Beach and Coca Cola

More relentless wind again this week and weekend. This time I made a return to Avon beach at Christchurch harbour entrance.Conditions were windy, windier than I was expecting and I spent a couple of hours on my 4.2 in the morning before changing to a bigger sail in the afternoon.Avon is a strange place to windsurf - freshwater, running out of the harbour a few hundred metres upwind, has the quality of peat water (and stories abound of people falling ill after sailing here) this also creates a downwind rip that makes upwind sailing a solid test every run out.The constant flow of water has also built up sandbanks in the bay that push up the waves some 50m offshore, so with a good swell running sailing here can be a lot like reef sailing and particularly good for jumping. With all of the recent rain the harbour was emptying at a rate of knots yesterday and I would imagine the water quality was particularly poor - random internet opinion seems to be that a bottle of coke after you sail kills all that nasty field run off and flood water bacteria... Sounds unlikely to me but I drunk one anyway!
