Dogs back on top as Team15 kicks off in Wales

Gwent Windsurfers Reservoir Dogs showed they are determined to make it a hat-trick of Welsh titles, with a new team of quick learners.

They won the first round of the RYA Wales Team15 Inter-Club Championship, keeping the Reservoir Dogs in line to win the title claimed for the last two years by a different group from the Llandegfedd Reservoir club, sponsored by Neil Pryde.

Alex Deakin claimed first place in the 3.5m class just a year after he missed the buoys and failed to get round the course, while Anya Lawrenson finished second after only learning to windsurf upwind at a T15 refresher course the day before.

Her skill against the wind allowed her to pip clubmate Jack Fitzpatrick who has also recently taken up windsurfing. Experience allowed George Atkin to claim first place in the 5.8m class. “It was a fantastic day for windsurfing in the hot weather and the Reservoir Dogs certainly took advantage,” said T15 co-ordinator Stuart Meese.

“It was the sort of day when they were more than happy to fall in the water – in fact the parents on the shore were looking for excuses to go into the water too to cool down! Luckily we had lots of suncream.

“Reservoir Dogs showed they are once again the team to beat with a new group of windsurfers, but they showed they are a strong team of quick learners.

“Alex had the advantage of some T15 experience from last year and that showed as he took the title, with Jack and Anya swapping second and third place all day – with Anya just edging ahead at the end".

Supported by industry leaders Tushingham/Starboard and Neil Pryde, T15 was set up by the RYA to help make windsurfing more accessible and appealing to youngsters at a grass roots level.

Fun and informal training sessions take place at T15 clubs all over the country for kids up to the age of 15, which are run weekly by specialist RYA coaches.

The T15 inter-club championship takes place regionally over the summer adding a competitive edge and race training for those keen to hone their skills.

Kit can be borrowed from the clubs and the cost of sessions is kept low. To get involved with Team15 and locate your nearest local club visit www.team15.org.uk or contact the RYA 0845 345 0400.
