The two last PWA World cup events of the year is completed, and now I only have the Danish championships and maybe the Redbull Stormchase left to do before my winter training can begin. The PWA World Cup in Klitmøller was once again a great success and it was a privileged for me to be able to compete against the best of the world on my home spot. The conditions weren’t as good as the past two years, but neither the less we sailed a full double elimination.
The first day of the contest the wind was really light, but it came from a sideshore direction, and there was some head high sets coming through. In my first heat I was seeded through to second round and was against Pozo local Omar Sanchez. Because the wind was so light I was really struggling to keep upwind, where the best waves were and therefore I spend to much time of the heat just trying to get up there. In the end I didn’t pic up any good waves and that resulted in me loosing the heat. That meant for the first time of the year I was out, and all the way back to the first heat in the double elimination.
In the first heat of the double elimination I was up against my good friend and fellow Danish guy Mikkel Asmussen. Mikkel put up a good fight but in the end I won the heat. Next up was another friend of mine, Klitmøller local Mads Bjørnå. I sailed my best heat of the day, which secured me the victory and one more heat in the double elimination. My last heat of the day was against John Skye who put up a prober fight for the victory. John sailed a better heat and therefor advanced to the next one, which meant I was out of the contest and finished 17th. To be honest I was aiming for a better result as I finished 6th last year, but never the less I’m still happy to make it that far in the tough competition.
During the week I had a few Danish TV stations following me. One of them was from the biggest Danish TV stations, and they made a program about the town of Klitmøller, the event and me. It was featured Sunday night in prime time. Check it out. It’s in Danish though.
A few days after the PWA World Cup in Klitmøller ended the whole PWA circus moved to Sylt where the last World Cup of the year took place. After last year where there was no wind at all for the whole event, this year the wind came back strong, and we got results in all the disciplines. The first day of wave competition the wind was once again quite light, but at least sideshore, and I actually don’t think it becomes much better for wave sailing at Sylt. This time I was also seeded trough to second round and was against Dutch guy Martin Ten Hoeve. The wind was still really light and everyone was struggling to stay upwind and to get trough the shore break. But I managed to put together a good heat, and advanced to the third round
In the double elimination I had Marcillio Browne in my first heat. He had an early exit in the single elimination and was really motivated to make a better result for him self. Yet again the wind was really light and everyone was struggling to keep upwind. Therefore I spend to much time trying to get back up wind so I came up short in the end, and lost the heat to Marcillio.
I finished 17th again which didn’t help my overall ranking at all. I‘m now ranked 18th on the overall ranking, which is a set back from my last year ranking which was 11th. But the competition is really hard, and on the positive site I only have had consisted results all year. Worst result was a 17th and best result was a 13th. I’m still very motivated to train and improve for next years contests, and just around the corner my favourite time of the year will come. Winter training :-)
All the best,
Kenneth Danielsen
