With all the PWA events on the Canaries finished for this year the Severne team riders can look back on a great results on all 3 events. Multiple top 10 finishes, 3 event victories and another 4 podium places making it a great summer for all Severne riders! We caught up with the Freestyle team to listen how their summer event on the Canaries went in Fuerteventura!
Amado Vrieswijk NB-20 :
You where one of the stand out sailors of this event again fighting back in the double and just missing a spot on the poduim, what was your best moment this event?
My best moment during the competition was the moment when I heard I advanced against Bjorn and I could improve my 5th position in the single to a 3rd or 4th place against Gollito.
As you are probably the biggest revelation of this year and only 33 points (1 place) behind a top 3 finish this season how do you plan to claim your first podium on the overall ever with probably just one more event to go?
I’m back home now on Bonaire and the wind this year keeps blowing, so I will train as much as possible, to be focussed and well prepared for the upcoming and last competition of the season on Sylt. I’ll just give my very best and we will see what the outcome will be. So far I’m super happy with my results this year. If not this year on the podium than i will be fighting for it next year
Rick Jendrusch H-120:
In the single elimination you just missed out on a spot in the top 16 which gave you only the chance to work up in the double where you finished 25th, how did you feel about your sailing after the event?
Yes in the single elimination i was just missing 0,5 point against Adrian Beholz to get into the top 16! But i ended up 24th after the double! Not such a good result!
It seems hard for you to still get a top 20 result on the overall this year but your freesailing is still of super high level, what do you think is the difference with last year?
I can say its not my year till now! I'm actually really ready on the water but in the pwa competitions i'm always going down! I feel really shit about that and want to do better. I have some mind setting problems this year and was really busy with school this winter. But i think it's my mental weak point at the moment! I already closed this season and start training for next year now! I want to go still to al the events but i train for next year, i'm done with school and will train the full year so i will double up my results
Dieter Van der Eyken B-35:
After an unussual early loss in the single in the 3th round you had one of you hardest doubles lined up in a long time, are you happy with 7th place or did you expect more of this event?
I’m happy I still could come back in the double, just to bad I met Amado to get past 7th place and it wasn’t blowing 40 knots.. But well after the early los against Adrian Bosson who sailed an amazing heat I’m happy I could put a good heat together against Tonky Frans to get just into the top 10. For sure I expected more from the event I can and should do better but I made one mistake and I almost payed a very big price for it but lucky for me i didn’t..
You are back in the top 5 on the overall this year with probably just one more event, what is your plan to keep this spot and what is your goal still this year on the last event?
Well my biggest treath is Björn for kicking me out of the top 5 but mainly I just want to finish the year strong with at least a top 5 result if not better. I feel I have the level for it and can sail really high scoring heats so hopefully I can end the year good in Sylt and train even harder towards next year!
Balz Muller Sui-21:
Top 10 place for you and probably the biggest upset from the whole single elimination making top 8 , what was your original goal for this event and what did you change in your training to make it this far?
I feel so lucky about my result and I’ve never expected that. This time my goal was just to improve my heat-sailing means I didn’t tried stupid moves anymore. I know that my sailing improved a lot in the past months even I wasn’t surfing as much as the other competitors. But I was doing lot of mental surf training and even started to dance all my move-compos on the beach. That worked out well for me.
In the double you even got Dieter pretty nervues sailing a pretty solid heat, will you be competing more upcoming years or do rather make more impressive clips like the „choco balz” clip? Speaking of when is your next edit dropping?
I don’t like the view of competition in sport, you know there will be always just one with a huge smile: the winner. As in freesailing everyone is improving his own goals and feels so happy about it! And exactly those emotions I like to get on camera. So to answer your question, my focus is on making movies and having fun on the water, but competition is the possibility to get hooked with all the other surf dudes.

First of all Congratulations for your first Poduim finish on a PWA event and your 2th place on the overall ranking, how are you feeling after a year like this?
Thanks! I feel great! It was a dream come true and now I'm even more motivated to learn new moves like Sarah! To be 2nd overall is sick and I'm happy I trained well this season learning moves that are suited Fuerteventura well.
So for the girls Fuerteventura was the last event, what are your plans now and how will you prepare for next year?
My next plans: hopefully Poland indoor event if I get a wild card!
And I'm hoping to go back to train in Brazil before christmast.
Now I'm still in Europe with the car in my roadtrip... I will be going to the netherlands very soon so will probably score some great sessions there with the locals!
Maaike Huvermann H-108
A 6th place in Fuerteventura wasn’t probably you where hoping for this event what made this event so much harder than Bonaire?
I have been training a lot for Bonaire in the flat with bigger sails. I have only been training on my 3.6 and 4.0 a few times this winter so i wasn't really prepared for the conditions in Fuerte. I also injured my feet a few days before the event so i wasn't sailing a lot before the event.
You had to do a sail of against Olya Raskina for 3th place on the overall in conditions which obviously suit her better (finishing 2th on the event) how do you prepare for this and how happy are you about making that poduim this year already on the age of 16 years old?
I was happy and I didn't feel any pressure because I knew I was eighter 4th or 3rd in the overall and as my goal was to get in the top 4 I was already super happy!
I am super stoked by making the podium this year!!!!
