Shape:

Quite wide around the mast track and in the tail for its volume, the Starboard Quad 79 Carbon presents a new bottom shape this year with the Vee brought forward of the fins. This Vee is also seen behind the fins where it accentuates the tail kick.

The Quad is offered in Carbon and Wood constructions.

On the Water:

From the first step on this board, the handling feels natural and the sense of ownership comes quickly. The early planing is very correct, and the fin support is just enough to head back upwind after a long surf, although it isn't as proficient as its sister the Kode Wave. The width provides support and power. The sailing stance is positioned quite back on the board, with excellent overall comfort and a nice touch on the water. All of this is boosted by top of the line accessories.

However, it's clearly in the surf that the Quad shows all of its potential. It really does feel like you are riding a short board in surfing: the maneuverability is always there. It offers one of the best entry into the bottom turn, with the rail slicing through the water, providing phenomenal grip and the ability to produce real rail turns. The control is excellent as well, even when going vertical under the lip at high speeds. The rail-to-rail transition happens with surgical precision and the top turns come around naturally, no need to push too much. It's one of the freest board in the top turn, with the ability to produce big, powerful cutbacks with a lot of grip.

Verdict:

With the Quad, Starboard offers an amazingly versatile board that works anywhere although it prefers side-shore conditions. It's an unparalleled surfer who's had enough versatility added to its genes to become one of the best boards this year for sailors with high standards.

Pros:

+ Surfing+ Control in the Bottom Turn+ Grip in Cutback+ Maneuverability+ Accessories

Cons:

- On-Shore Conditions
