Shape:
The Atom IQ 110 boasts an aggressive rail profile on a shape that features long cut-aways, a wide hull but a narrow tail with reduced drag and a relatively flat and fast rocker inspired from the iSonics. This year, the Atom IQ range sees the addition of the 130, 140 and 160 liter models who follow the same concept as their smaller counterparts. They are now also available in AST Tufskin technology.
On the Water:
The shortest and widest shape of the test group, with very round yet thin rails and an oval like shape, the Atom IQ is a likeable board. This first impression is confirmed from the first steps on the board, with a soft and comfortable early planing which is nonetheless very efficient.
Feet inside the footstraps, the rider is perfectly settled on a spongy pad with incomparable grip thanks to the diamond shaped grooving. The harmonious deck dome is further enhanced by the shape of the pad and offers ergonomic comfort which is very much appreciated in chop where these "suspensions" help to mellow out the nervous character of the Carbon construction.
The cruising speed doesn't feel as fast as it should but sensations are guaranteed thanks to the phenomenal glide, reactivity and accelerations at every little gust. The Starboard Atom IQ 110 Carbon is so lively that it mirrors the wind variations, accelerating strongly in gusts and slowing down in lulls.
In strong winds, the handling remains relatively easy with a fiery behavior, riding on its narrow tail with cut-aways to reach high speeds.
In the jibe, the Atom IQ confirms its soft character: the entry into the curve happens naturally and easily with a soft touch followed by an average arch curve which is not too tight nor too wide and can be adjusted if needed.
Verdict:
The Atom IQ's softness and gentleness are the main highlights of this Starboard as they are noticeable in every sailing aspect. From getting planing to jibing, this board reassures the rider and boosts confidence thanks to a very tolerant and efficient ride. The core is stiff and reactive but the fittings help soften it up.
A huge progression can be achieved with the Atom IQ, but performance is always there if you push it to its limits.
Pros:
+ Softness+ Comfort+ Accessibility+ Accelerations
Cons:
- Short back foot pad
