Swansea windsurfers come out on top

The group which won the T15 windsurfing event held at the Welsh Schools and Clubs Championships included 13-year-old Lewis Potter who learned to windsurf during the lunch break to compete with twin brother Joe - and then managed to win the final race of the day.

However Joe Potter had the last laugh as he won the overall award in the 3.5m class, while Ben Marshall from Reservoir Dogs, based in Llandegfedd, was the overall winner in the Techno 6.8m class.

The Swansea Watersports team was only started this year to take up the exciting sport of windsurfing, so this was their first victory in a Welsh Zone Event.

The determinaion of the Swansea team was summed up by Ryan Hollis who completed every race despite an ankle injury. It was the first time the windsurfers had competed at the championships for many years, while Ann Ellis OBE presented the prizes on behalf of Sport Wales along with Welsh Sailing chairman Chris Basten.

Ellis presented Robinson with a T15 Ambassador's Rash Vest for his contribution to Welsh Windsurfing in 2010 when he was the only Welsh representative at the Champions Cup.

He had a close battle throughout the day with clubmate Ben Marshall, both Zone Squad sailors who demonstrated their strengths on different parts of the course.

Richard Mills the South & West Wales Windsurf Development Officer was shocked by how quick the Swansea Watersports T15 club could go from never having been on a board to completing their first races.

"I would not have believed that with just two short lessons - and in Lewis' case, half an hour over lunch - these guys could windsurf themselves around a simple course and take part in T15 racing," he said.

Supported by industry leaders Tushingham/Starboard, Windsurf magazine, Boards magazine, Neil Pryde and Boardwise, T15 was set up by the RYA to help make windsurfing more accessible and appealing to youngsters at a grass roots level.

Fun and informal training sessions take place at T15 clubs all over the country for kids up to the age of 15, which are run weekly by specialist RYA coaches. The T15 inter-club championship takes place regionally over the summer adding a competitive edge and race training for those keen to hone their skills. Kit can be borrowed from the clubs and the cost of sessions is kept low.
