If you have already checked out our ‘How To Rig Your Windsurf Sail Correctly‘ post a while back then you know the basic step by step process involved in successfully & quickly setting up your windsurf kit.

Here we are going to go a little more in depth and outline some really great top tips you can use when rigging a windsurf sail. There are some great time savers that some windsurfers go years without knowing!

So, some of the lesser know insider tips for a hassle free windsurf rigging session…

1. Make sure you lay out all of the component parts of your rig BEFORE you start rigging. So many times you see frenzied windsurfers running back and forth to the car collecting various bits & bobs, whilst their half rigged sail thrashes about in the breeze getting damaged! If you set out all the parts in one neat pile then you can rig a complete sail in one calm collected session. Don’t forget to have an easy rig tool at hand for the downhaul!

Read the rigging spec sheet that is printed on the sail bag and/or the foot of the actual sail so that you get the correct mast out your car & can setup both mast extension and boom to the right length.

2. Only roll out the lower section of your sail then start inserting the top half of the mast. This avoids having a fully unrolled sail flogging around in the wind, getting creased.

3. If rigging on concrete, keep the sail off the ground whilst sliding the mast in. This stops the sail, particularly the batten pockets from getting worn.

4. Slide the mast as far up the luff (front) tube of the sail as possible then take the sail mid way at the boom cutout to move the mast further up to the top.

5. Make sure the two mast sections are joined together completely & do not move apart when rigging. A slight gap can cause the mast to snap, which could end up going through the luff tube of the sail – not good!

6. Learn how to thread your downhaul so the ropes do not rub against each other otherwise its hard to get the necessary tension & can be even harder to release when the ropes gets jammed in each other!

7. Look at the head of the sail when downhauling. Make it go wrinkly in to the visual indicator on the sail (any good sail manufacturer puts a marker on the sail to give you a visual reference point to which you can downhaul your sail to). Take note – modern sails pretty much set at one downhaul setting and you fine tune for the wind strength by adjusting the outhaul.

8. Remember what height you like your boom at! Most modern sails have a marking system you can use as a reference.

9. Make a knot in the end of your outhaul rope, so it doesn’t ever fall out past the jam cleat. This gives you a permanent loop which you just thread through the eyelet, hook over the pulley block of the boom and tension – job done!

10. Take it easy with the amount of outhaul. Usually neutral or 0cm tension, whereby you are just take up the slack in the outhaul rope will give you a minimum setting. 1-3cm will be the range you can play with, 1cm for light winds & 3cm for maxed out conditions.
